Sign Cabinets

Updated

Sign cabinets are larger single- or double-sided box signs, such as pylon and monument signs. TMT’s material recommends its Midi-series modules for these, either mounted directly or snapped into the Midi Stick aluminium profile. The figures below are TMT’s own recommendations for specific products and are shown as each source states them.

Modules TMT lists for cabinets

Product Installation depth TMT states (distance to sign face) Sources
Midi 3 2”–6” (US); 5–15 cm (global) Midi 3 datasheet; global Midi 3 datasheet
Midi 4 2”–10” (US, applications); 3”–10” (features text and global page); 5–25 cm (global) US Midi 4 datasheet; tmtleds.com Midi 4; global Midi 4 datasheet
Midi Edge Cabinets from 3” deep (US) / 7.5 cm (global); single- and double-sided cabinets and retrofits Midi Edge datasheet; global Midi Edge datasheet
Mini 2 2”–6” deep channel letters and cabinets (US page) usa.tmtleds.com Mini 2

The Midi 4 datasheet also names retrofitting existing fluorescent lighting as an application (Midi 4 datasheet). A US distributor lists a “TMT Midi 4 Deep” variant for cabinets 8” and deeper; this name was not found on TMT’s own pages (ABC Sign Products Midi 4 Deep; see Legacy and candidate products).

Midi Stick profile system

TMT describes the Midi Stick as an aluminium profile supplied in 240 cm / 8 ft lengths and cut to size; Midi modules snap into its “I-Beam” profile and can be slid closer together to change brightness (tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet Solutions). TMT says the profile is rigid enough to be installed horizontally without sagging, and that connectors allow it to replace 300 cm lamps in retrofits (tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet Solutions). The US page lists a standard profile length of 95” alongside the 8 ft description (usa.tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet & Lightbox Products).

The US site lists these parts: Retrofit Connector, Single Side Connector, Double Side Connector, Single Side Profile and Double Side Profile, with Midi 4 24V and Midi 3 12V cabinet modules (usa.tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet & Lightbox Products). Midi 3, Midi 4 and Midi Edge datasheets describe the modules as snap-in compatible with the Midi Stick, which TMT describes as patent pending (Midi 3 datasheet).

TMT’s worked example

TMT’s cabinet page gives one worked example of a double-sided cabinet with Midi 4 12V 1.68 W modules (tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet Solutions; usa.tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet & Lightbox Products):

Item Value as stated
Cabinet size 120 × 240 × 25 cm (global); 4’ × 8’ × 20” (US)
Modules per bar 8
Total modules 32
Total lumen 8000 lm
Power consumption 53.76 W
Power supply 1 × 60 W Class 2

The cabinet depth differs between the global (25 cm) and US (20”, about 51 cm) versions of the same example, while all other figures match; the example may have been written separately for each market. The same pages give reference tables of module count, lumen and wattage per profile length from 60 cm to 300 cm (24” to 120” on the US site) (tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet Solutions; usa.tmtleds.com Sign Cabinet & Lightbox Products).

For module spacing inside cabinets, see Module spacing and depth; for smaller boxes, see Lightboxes.
